Shirley has been riding and involved with horses her whole life, and produced horses and ponies with her father and Jim Brown – a proper ‘old fashioned horseman’. Between them they produced and sold several excellent ponies that went on to compete at the Horse of the Year Show and Royal International Horse Show, and names top showjumper Graham Fletcher as one of their numerous customers. After leaving school, Shirley embarked on a career in Retail, in which she stayed for over 40 years.

She has always had a passion for helping others, however, and took her BHSAI qualifications in the 1990s – since then  she has helped some of Cumbria’s best riders on the circuit today. Showjumping being her favourite discipline, she takes great pride in helping her riders get great results.

Her son Jack has ridden from the age of two, in Showing and Showjumping classes and is a very competent jockey in his own right.

Today Shirley enjoys organising shows and events for new competitors and is particularly keen to encourage novice riders and new combinations in to their first few competitions, providing a supportive, encouraging environment to make competing fun for all and taking away the pressure! She has been heavily involved with Caldew Riding Club, and now also organises many events using the fantastic facilities at Greenlands Equestrian Centre.
